French Research Institute for Development

The French Research Institute for Development (IRD in French) is a government research organisation jointly administered by the French ministry responsible for Research and the Foreign Affairs ministry. It is located at 5 main sites in France, 5 sites in French overseas territories (DOM-TOM) and 23 sites in the tropical developing countries. The annual budget of the institute is about 190M€ enabling it to employ 2187 people, including 831 scientists and 803 engineers, technicians and administrative staff. The IRD is organised into 97 research and service units that conduct research programmes oriented toward the study of the relations between man and his environment. Most of the programmes take place in Africa, in the Indian Ocean, in Latin America, in Asia and in the Pacific. The IRD publications database (http://www.bondy.ird.fr/pleins_textes) contains 60 000 references to IRD research publications.

Rôle: IRD will be the project coordinator and will be responsible for project management according to the methods described in section 6).IRD will also act as facilitator for WP1 relating to the data collection systems and will play an active role in the field of the training (WP 4), in data quality control (WP2), assessments (WP3) and the dissemination of information (WP5).
