an 80 mm T90 mesh panel in the extension and last tapered section

to improve trawl selectivity

Target species:
Whiting >32cm, haddock >34cm, monkfish, squid, cuttlefish and red mullet

Area, Vessel
38 pairs of alternate hauls were carried out from October 2017 to February 2018 on board 20-24 m bottom trawlers fishing in the Western Channel.
Gear type:
demersal

Gear modification
A standard trawl with an 80 mm codend and extension was compared with a test trawl that had a 15 m long, 80 mm T90 panel in the last tapered section and extension.

Results:
Although there is a difference between the test periods and trawls, the 80mm T90 appears to be the optimum mesh size for targeting whiting from 33cm. There are large reductions of undersized haddock and whiting and of all sizes of small pelagics such as mackerel and horse mackerel. Nevertheless, no loss of target species appears through the T90 panel, even for squid. It may be related to the T90 netting being more open and providing a greater swimming space below it.
