Reduce discards in whitefish fisheries.

whiting, haddock, cod, hake, anglerfish, megrim, plaice and rays

60 twin trawl hauls took place in 2014 and 2015 on Antaeus (20.85 m, 412 kW) and La Perouse (23.96 m, 515 kW) in the Celtic sea.

Gear modification
The netting in the extension and codend is turned by 90º to induce a larger cross-section for the same mesh size . The mandatory 120 mm square mesh panel is inserted in the extension.


Results:
There was a 30% reduction of the total discard weight in comparison to the standard diamond mesh codend with a 120 mm smp. There was a strong improvement in the selectivity of gadoids, but also a potential commercial loss of small grade gadoids. There were large reductions of discards of boarfish, gurnards, pouts and mackerel. There was no reduction of flat fish or anglerfish discards. Sorting time was reduced and fish quality improved and currently the gear is being used on a voluntary basis in the fishery.
